…Led by the imposing personality of Russian Gregori Schechter, they play examples of Klezmer music – essentially dance music played by travelling Jewish bands – from all over Europe.
It is infectious, fast and sadly neglected now. Thankfully the Festival Band are on a crusade to ensure Klezmer survives as a folk art form.
They produced a storming set on the opening night at the Picture Playhouse and played at a memorable late-night dance session in the Leisure Centre on Saturday night.
